About

What's in a name?

Mary Ballou, my great, great grandmother.

My namesake and history, family, memories. From an early age an understanding of quality. My mother an antiques dealer and collector, newspaper editor and admirer of all things in their simplest form.  So much of Mary Ballou Design is about family. From the name to an appreciation of artists - my maternal grandmother an amazing artist, schooled at Parson's and a lifetime spent painting porcelains of waterfowl of the Eastern Shore of Virginia. My father's family located in the hometown of Crane Paper. These snippets of childhood have made their way into the everyday of Mary Ballou Design.

Which brings us to Lake Placid, NY. With a degree in Environmental Science I moved to Lake Placid with my husband. After working several years for a regional non-profit economic development agency, I worked from home and raised our beautiful daughter. Mary Ballou Design developed in 2008 and after many years of regional farmers markets and fulfilling wholesale accounts, I opened the Main Street location.
